The Gap Nobody Is Talking About

Summer is when children lose the most academic ground and when they are most consistently connected to coaches and sports programs. These two facts exist side by side. Breaking the Huddle Education connects them.

📉
The Summer Slide Is Real
Students lose an average of two months of academic progress every summer, with math hit hardest. By fifth grade, significantly affected students can be 2.5 to 3 years behind their peers. The gap compounds year over year.
Only 31% of teachers say students retained what they learned the previous year — 2024 Progress Learning Survey
🏟️
Kids Are Already Showing Up
65% of youth ages 6–17 played sports in 2024, the highest rate ever recorded. Summer is the second most active season for youth sports. Tens of millions of children are motivated, at practice, and listening to adults they trust.
55.4% of youth played organized sports in 2023 — highest since pre-COVID (Aspen Institute State of Play, 2025)
🏈
Coaches Are the Missing Link
The coach-athlete relationship is one of the most powerful developmental relationships in a child’s life. Coaches have always had the trust, consistent contact, and a motivated young person showing up voluntarily. What they’ve never had is a curriculum built around stories where every kid on the field, especially the girls, sees themselves as the hero.
93% of coaches trained in youth development practices report greater confidence and stronger athlete outcomes (Aspen Institute, 2025)

What Are Huddle Hero Challenges?

Short, meaningful learning activities built around the Breaking the Huddle book series. Kids complete them at home between practices — and bring them back to their coach. Each challenge covers five subject areas across five days, per chapter.

📖
Day 1
Reading & Vocabulary
Story-connected ELA with vocabulary, comprehension, and writing
💛
Day 2
SEL & Identity
Social-emotional learning tied to character, belonging, and self-awareness
🔢
Day 3
Math
Story-connected math problems scaled to each grade band
🔬
Day 4
Science & Social Studies
Real-world concepts from science or history tied to each chapter
🏃
Day 5
PE & Movement
Physical activities, weekly reflection, and Huddle Hero points tracker

Every activity reinforces the core academic skills that educators, researchers, and child development experts universally agree matter most — reading, writing, math, science, and social-emotional learning.

Who Is This For?

Huddle Hero Challenges come in three editions — each designed for a different role in a child’s life.

For Players — The Hero Edition

Players take home one chapter challenge per practice and work through 5 days of activities on their own schedule. Each page connects directly to the Breaking the Huddle story — making learning feel like part of the game, not a break from it.

  • 5 subject areas per chapter
  • Drawing activities for K–2
  • Writing prompts for 3–5
  • Analytical essays for 6–8
  • Movement challenges each week
  • Huddle Hero points tracker
  • Level Up bonus activities
  • Family Dinner Prompt included

For Coaches — The Coach Edition

The Coach Edition replaces the Family Dinner Prompt with a Coach Note — a 60–90 second practice connection that ties each challenge back to the field. No teaching required. Hand it out, collect it, and celebrate every player who brings it back.

  • Same 5-day challenge structure
  • Coach Note on every chapter
  • 60-second practice connections
  • Season Tracker for each player
  • Builds team culture off the field
  • No education background needed
  • Works with any sport or program
  • Strengthens coach-athlete bond

For Parents & Families — The Family Edition

The Family Edition adds a Parent Note to each chapter — giving family members the context and conversation tools to engage meaningfully. Your only job: ask what they worked on and listen. That’s genuinely enough to make a difference.

  • Parent guidance note per chapter
  • Family Dinner Prompt every week
  • No teaching or grading required
  • Works in the car, at dinner, outside
  • 15 minutes makes a measurable impact
  • For parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles
  • Builds family conversation habits
  • Connects sports to whole-child growth

Three Levels. One Team.

Every Huddle Hero Challenge comes in three grade-band versions. Each tier is built specifically for that stage of development, not a simplified version of the previous tier.

Grades K–2
Ages 5–8
Drawing activities, vocabulary tables, feeling check-ins, simple math, and movement challenges. Most activities can be completed verbally with a parent for pre-readers.
⭐⭐
Grades 3–5
Ages 8–11
Independent reading and writing, multi-step math, basic research prompts, and science connections. Core challenge takes 10–15 minutes. Level Up bonus takes 15–20 minutes.
⭐⭐⭐
Grades 6–8
Ages 11–14
Analytical writing with evidence, research-based science and social studies, argumentative challenges, and deliberate practice protocols. Core 15 min. Level Up 20 min.

“The student and the athlete aren’t two different kids. They show up to the field together, every single time. Every Huddle Hero Challenge meets them there and builds the athlete, the reader, the thinker, the leader, and the person, one chapter at a time.”

The most important thing that can happen on a summer sports field isn’t just a great play. It’s a child who walks off that field more curious, more capable, and more confident in who they are.
